why teaching in China

China is one of the countries with the highest demand for English teachers. Although pay is higher in South Korea and Japan, the amount here is more than sufficient to live on. With plenty of EFL jobs available it is no surprise that China remains one of the most popular destinations for EFL teachers. Our Finding TEFL work guide for China tells you more.

Why is there a demand for English teachers?
Private English teaching is a booming industry in China and it is the native speakers who are benefiting. There are believed to be more than 100,000 EFL teachers in the country and yet the demand continues to grow and grow.

English is often taught in nurseries and is compulsory for all students up to the age of nine. In order to pass the university entrance examination students have to pass a foreign language test, and most choose to study English. China’s growing middle-class are also keen to make sure that their children learn to speak it.

All of these factors add up to create an insatiable demand. More than anywhere else in the world, China is probably the easiest place to find work as an EFL teacher. Some people are put-off China because of the higher wages found in neighbours South Korea and Japan, but bear in mind that the cost of living is much more expensive in these countries.

Where do EFL teachers live?
The mega-cities of Beijing and Shanghai are the most popular destinations, but with 70% of China’s population currently living in the countryside, there are also lots of rural opportunities. Finding work in disputed territories, such as Jiangxi , Zhejiang , Jiangsu

Do I need to learn/speak Chinese?
No you don’t. All of the lessons you give will be entirely in English. However it will help you in your day to day life if you can learn some of the local lingo. In big cities many signs will be written in English but a lot of the people, especially the older generation, cannot speak it.

What is the food like?
Much like the weather, Chinese food varies from region to region. There are some common characteristics in that most dishes are made up of vegetables and rice or noodles. While you will no doubt enjoy the food, please bear in mind that it bears little resemblance to what you get from your local Chinese takeaway, which is usually deep-fat fried and full of MSG.

What will I do in the evenings, on days off or on my holidays?
Due to its sheer size, you could spend a lifetime exploring this fascinating place. In the sprawling cities you will see over-crowded streets while people still enjoy a remarkably traditional way of life in the countryside. China is also home to some of the most famous tourist attractions on earth – including the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and the Terracotta Warriors.

When is the best time to travel to China for English Teaching jobs?
The abundance of positions in China mean that you should have no problems finding work, whatever time of year you go.
